Happy New Year?

New year's resolutions, to me, seem an opportunity for self-loathing, debasement, and guilt resulting from when you ultimately wrestle free of them. So I don't make them, and have a horror of elementary and high school teachers who assign them. If you do, however, like starting the year with guidelines, here's a book that discusses our cultural phenomenon of obesity, what may contribute to it, and what you can do to battle it.


If you'd like a different lens through which to ponder the new year, to nourish the psyche, I recommend this one. I found its tips insightful and humane.

By the by, drop me a line if there's a particular recipe or dish whose aroma or memory is haunting your palate. I'll try to dig a successful one up. Or is there something you'd like to share here? Lemme know!

  2. Ja, I've been trying the Mark Bittman diet of eating only fresh fruits and vegetables before six pm, and eating anything you like after. But I cheated today on day 3. Doesn't bode well.

  4. For a while I ate whatever I wanted to. Then I parked my butt in front of the computer too much. I think if I hiked as much as the Hiker does, I might be able to eat like I used to. If I could just stop getting older, that is.

    P--the only time in my entire life I was able to eat anything without consequence was when I had a hyperactive thyroid. Ah, sweet memories! I even got an LA times piece out of it--

  7. He speaks with some authority in my book because he's been there. He addresses issues I often hear within a particular group whose meetings I have reluctantly/recently returned to. An obsession of the mind. Ground zero
