What are you reading?

And by that, I mean, what have you fallen into, and need to shake yourself when you pause and re-enter the actual world around you?  What has overwhelmed and enveloped you, carted you away?
Let me know.  I have a wide open summer and I am hungry for books to devour.

  2. I loved "pillars of the earth" by Ken Follet and just started "world without end." Also, "year of wonders" by Geraldine Brooks.

  4. Crazy but I am re-reading (read: listening to on audio book) S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders," which had a profound affect on me in sixth grade (in that I have since had a boundless attraction to bad boys - in fiction, thank goodness not in life). It is silly and dated and ridiculous, but I finally figured out why it was all the rage back in the day: It features cute bad boys who do nothing but talk about their feeeeeellllings and love horses. The adolescent girl trifecta!

  5. 'The Solace of Open Spaces' Gretel Ehrlich

Hoping to read Margaret Atwood's 'Oryx and Crake' and 'The Year of the Flood"

  7. Don't you love Karen's comment? "The adolescent girl trifecta!" That kills me. So true!. Growing up I was always being placed in the 'lowered expectations' classes; affectionately referred to as Tardsville. The Outsider was always on our specialized juvenile delinquent lit list.

  8. LOL, re Tardsville! ;-) I did some research after I finished The Outsiders (which actually is not a bad book, all in all) and it is STILL among the most-banned titles ever. Of course the bad boys are always smoking, drinking and fighting - along with quoting Robert Frost and reading Gone With The Wind (totally serious here)- so I guess that's always going to be controversial. All of Hinton's YA novels were made into movies, some with pretty impressive casts, but I've never seen any of them. I think I will stick with my own imaginary visuals of Darry, SodaPop and Ponyboy. :-)

  9. It's been a long time since I've read something that really sucked me in. I keep hearing about "Pillars of the Earth," though, so I may have to give it a try.

  10. Oh, but if you haven't read it, Cheryl Strayed's "Wild" is truly wonderful.

  11. According to my branch of the LA library system, I'm now the 242 person in line for George Saunders' Tenth of December: Stories.

Atwood's Year of the Flood was available.
