It was based on the Glyndebourne Festival's version.

Did you see it live?
ReplyDeleteYes. It was musical perfection. Over a week ago and it is still echoing in my mind.
ReplyDeleteAh, good. It's a favorite of mine. (Few operas are favorites of mine, but this is one.)
ReplyDeleteYes, I did miss the opera. I admit it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an opera afficionado but I once had tickets to see several operas thanks to a client who left the country for a while and gave me hers. LA Opera, good seats. I saw "Madama Butterfly" with Placido Domingo (fab!), "Don Giovanni" (dull, everything about it was gray from costumes to sets to performances) and "Il barbiere di Siviglia" with Rodney Gilfry, with whom I fell immediately in love.
ReplyDeleteThat was the year of the release of the first Three Tenors CD. I was rapt.
Oh, that's funny, because I really like Don Giovanni. But Gounod's Faust was a disappointment -- went to the opera loving two tunes. Three hours later, left loving those two tunes only.
ReplyDeletemy friends: the cognoscenti!
ReplyDeleteWould love to see Faust. I know little about opera and don't care much for recordings, but when I have a chance to see it live I'm dazzled.
ReplyDeletethe set looks as if James Turrel (a light and space artist) designed it. His Pomona College installation
